Approaches to Painting

This course is designed for students who wish to see a progression
in their learning. To that end, the three terms will build
successively on each other. It is therefore recommended that
students attend all three terms to gain optimal understanding
of this approach to painting.

TERM I
An overview of the fundamentals of painting will be covered
in this term. Focusing on drawing and painting, the class will
learn to create light and shadow using a limited colour palette.
Students will learn to control the elements of painting and
create strong compositions in order to maximize their expression
with the medium. The subject of study will be still life or
landscape.

TERM II
This term will focus on developing a comprehensive understanding
of the portrait. The term will be divided between, 1) learning
the structure and proportions of the human head from reference
and props and, 2) working from the live costumed model. Building
on the experience of the first term, students will further
their paint handling ability and learn about the blending of
edges and how to use colour and value to create the illusion
of form.

TERM III
Creating a finished work of art can be challenging. This term
combines the information covered in the first two terms and
looks at how to successfully start and finish a painting. Students
will begin with a preliminary sketch, choose a composition
and make a value and a colour study of their subject. From
their studies, they will put it altogether to create a well-executed
finished work of art. The subject of study will vary according
to individual interests.

Figure & Portrait Drawing & Painting

Designed for students who would like to explore the figure
in-depth, this class will delve into the many subtle details
of working with this subject matter using both drawing and
painting. Students will depict the figure in the context of
its surrounding space and will address some of the complex
issues related to drawing and painting the human form. Contour,
line, shading, highlighting, flesh tones, proportions and capturing
the individual's character will be some of the topics dealt
with in this studio class. This course is suitable for both
beginners and those who have had some experience in drawing
and painting.

Drawing & Painting: Independent Studies

This class will help students further define and develop their
own personal artistic style under the guidance of a professional
artist. Through lessons geared at refining perceptual skills,
drawing as the foundation for painting, paint application and
advanced colour comprehension, students will begin to create
a body of work based on their own interests and subject matter
- still life, photos and existing images. This course is suitable
for those with some previous drawing and painting experience.

Classical Painting Techniques

This program is designed for those who have tried painting,
but would like to have a better understanding of classical
approaches. Learn time-honoured techniques that have been passed
down from the Renaissance to the Impressionist period. Students
will learn the methods of building a painting by reproducing
works of traditional painters such as Velazquez, Vermeer, Sargent
and Pissarro. Effective techniques of transferring the drawing,
underpainting/ overpainting, dead colouring, scumbling, glazing
and painting alla prima will all become familiar in the course
of study. Students are encouraged to work on projects in either
oils or acrylics.
- *Students who want to work on independent projects in the
classical tradition can be accommodated in the Wednesday section.

Impressionist Painting

Concentrating on composition and colour, students will produce
at least two paintings per term using photographic resources.
At the turn of the century, the Impressionist painters had
more colours than ever before at their disposal. Students will
use simple colour systems and traditional methods to produce
reproductions of some of the world's most beautiful works of
art. The medium of choice is oil, however, those wishing to
paint with acrylic will be accommodated.

Interpreting Landscapes

This course is tailored for students who are comfortable with
painting in either acrylic or oil, and want to develop their
work technically and thematically. Students will concentrate
on developing unique visual statements that evoke a mood, feeling,
or idea. Each term, the class will explore different creative
processes for generating and refining fresh and new ideas.
Strategies for keeping a sketchbook will be explored. Students
will draw upon a range of source materials, including photographs,
art history, and memories. The course will emphasize marrying
the techniques used with the overall theme. Several canvases
and studies will be completed over the duration of the course.

Studio Painting: Independent Studies

This course is designed for students wishing to develop their
own painting style with assistance from a professional artist.
The student will primarily work on paintings and subjects of
their own choosing. This will be complemented with a limited
number of group studies intended to enhance the participants'
own direction. Topics of these studies will include, resolving
compositional problems, creating harmonious colour, technical
aspects of layering a painting vs working alla prima, and more.
Considerable time will be spent working one on one with the
instructor to develop a personal artistic direction, whether
you feel you have one or are looking to create one.
