Cartooning & IllustrationAre you interested in comics, cartoons, graphic novels or do you just like to draw? Students of any ability will learn to develop their narrative and graphic abilities through the use of dip pens, brush and ink, acrylic paint, scratchboard and more! Projects can include; trading cards, class comic anthologies, animation flip books and dozens of other activities developed through the surprisingly complex language of cartooning. Cartooning (Gr. 1-4)Draw your very own cartoon characters, creatures, animals and magical beasts. Using a variety of artist's tools and materials, including pencil, pen, ink, paint and more, students will design funny faces, outrageous bodies and the many dynamic actions and unique stories that go along with these new characters. Drawing & PaintingJennifer Chin • Sadko Hadzihasanovic´• Linda Prussick • Joseph Romantini Young artists will develop their artistic skills while having fun discovering their own personal style. Working from still life, photographs, slides, images from art history and/or independent themes and ideas, students will be introduced to specific drawing and painting fundamentals and techniques. These include line drawing, value, shape, pattern, texture, shading, highlighting, colour, perspective and collage. While experimenting with an exciting variety of artist's tools, media and techniques, students will learn to explore and trust their imaginations and creative instincts. Drawing & Painting From The Masters (Gr. 3-6)Students will learn the principles of drawing and painting, while discovering techniques employed by artists of the past and present. Using images from art history and many of the artist's tools and materials, students will reproduce and reinterpret art, while being introduced to specific fundamentals and techniques, including line drawing, value, shape, pattern, texture, shading, highlighting, colour, perspective and collage. This hands-on studio class is designed to give young artists an appreciation and understanding of art history in a fun and creative way. Saturday 1:30-3:00 pm
Drawing, Painting and Printmaking (Gr. 4-8)While creating works of art, students will practice methods of artmaking utilized in drawing, painting and printmaking. The many techniques popularized by artists in the 20th century, like collage and assemblage, will also be explored. Students will be on the road to discovering their unique, artistic style. Graffiti & Modern Art (Gr. 7-10)This drawing and painting class will use popular culture and mass media as source material to explore everyday life experiences. For inspiration, students will look to traditional drawing and painting techniques and approaches from 1970-1999 along with current techniques of pop and graffiti art. Friday 4:30-6:00 pm
Intro to Oil Painting (Gr. 9-12)Discover the techniques used by master painters. In this course students will begin their journey into oil painting, while developing confidence in their own painting ability. This class will explore the fundamentals of colour theory, paint handling and application. Through the creation of a body of work, students will discover their own unique style and approach to painting. Thursday 4:30-6:00 pm
Youth Studio: Creating A Portfolio Of Work (Gr. 8-12)This advanced studio course is intended for young artists interested in building a cohesive portfolio of work while developing their repertoire of art-making techniques. Through a series of hands-on projects, students will gain experience and technical proficiency in a wide variety of media. Techniques covered in this course include drawing and painting from observation, sculptural modeling and sketchbook and concept development. Studio work will be supplemented with discussions and critiques to allow students to develop a language through which they can exercise observation, research and critical thinking skills. For college, university and art school applicants, portfolios will be reviewed and prepared with the guidance of the instructor. Interview and presentation techniques will also be discussed.
