"Visionary Women: Canadian Art to Canvas" is a four-week virtual course designed to immerse students in the remarkable lineage of Canadian women artists, with a particular focus on the works and lives of pioneering creatives such as Joyce Weiland, Marion Long, Denyse Thomasos and Meryl McMaster. The goal of this course is structured to learn from the discovery and legacy of each of these visionary women. Rather than replicating their masterpieces, instead, it offers a deep dive into processes, perspectives, and the unique ways these artists engage with their surroundings.
Through a blend of theoretical discussions and practical applications, students will explore the diverse subject matter, themes, and perspectives that have shaped Canadian art. These insights act as a springboard for individual creative expression.
For four weeks, participants will be introduced to a different artist allowing exploration into a variety of artistic practices, historical contexts, and philosophical underpinnings that define Canadian female art. The fifth session allows for finishing, critique and discussion. The course is carefully structured to balance conceptual content with hands-on practice, featuring live demonstrations, guided painting sessions, and collaborative reviews. Students will engage in thought-provoking discussions and receive personalized feedback, fostering an environment where creativity can flourish. By drawing inspiration from the lives and works of these visionary women, students will be encouraged to develop their unique voice and artistic style.
