From Roots to Leaves: Drawing & Painting Trees
This artistic journey celebrates the beauty and diversity of trees, from their intricate root systems to the vibrant canopies of their leaves. Students will explore the details and personalities of trees through meticulous to gestural drawing and bring them to life with vibrant, expressive paintings, open to acrylic or gouache.
Through a series of exercises focused on gestural mark-making in drawing and painting, participants will incorporate a variety of mixed media elements, including graphite, charcoal, pastels, and paints, fostering layered and dynamic explorations inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s botanical studies to Leanne Shapton’s studies of the native trees in Canada.
The course encourages students to explore the realms of colour, line, composition, movement, and shape, allowing for the expression of various artistic preferences, whether one is drawn to the allure of impressionism or the precision of realism.
