This course invites new and experienced artists who wish to deep dive into portrait drawing. Over the span of twelve weeks, students will develop their ability through a structured system in creating beautiful, accurate and realistic portraits through fundamental skills in realism. Students will learn the must-have skills and concepts in beginning portrait drawing, starting with proper measuring techniques and creating a foundational structure called the “construct”. Each week, the class will look at how to “see” and work with light as it applies to composition, values and creating three-dimensional form as well as the importance of line, edge quality and the need to edit your information to create focus. While looking at the great artist, Johannes Vermeer, students will recreate the piece Girl With A Pearl Earring. In working from the Masters, it will allow for a true method of skill building in art training that has been used for centuries. Students will learn the process of deconstructing and emulating specific techniques used by the Old Masters to deepen their learning experience and build artistic confidence.
