Painting: Classical Techniques
The study of classical painterly technique, the application of pigment and understanding the quality of light has the ability to transform an art piece and completely affect how it is perceived. For centuries, artists have utilized methods of controlling light, shade and colour in capturing the world and eliciting visual narratives, moods, essences and qualities. Over the span of the course, students will explore various practical techniques of layering paint, qualities of light and shade, chiaroscuro, colour and creating spatial depth while examining artists of the past. Students will immerse themselves in the richness of art history through theory, demonstrations, creating and one to one tuition with the instructor. Students will explore the elements and principles of art and gain an understanding of different painterly approaches and methods in painting along with how to thoughtfully use pigment, technical and stylistic approaches in creating various compositions.
