Outline
Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Canadian landscape and embark on a creative journey through the brushstrokes of one of Canada's iconic artists, Tom Thomson. Join us for a 6-week virtual art class led by artist and educator, Martha Johnson, as we traverse the inspiring world of Tom Thomson and his profound impact on the art scene.
This course runs in perfect harmony with the McMichael Gallery's exhibition, "Tom Thomson: North Star," providing a unique opportunity for students to gain insights into Thomson's life and artwork through both Martha Johnson's expert guidance and the captivating exhibits at the gallery.
Week by week, the class will delve into the life and artwork of Tom Thomson, gaining a deeper understanding of his artistic style, techniques, and the unique inspiration he drew from the Canadian wilderness. Each session will be a celebration of Canadian art heritage, where students of all skill levels and painting media are welcomed to participate. Over the span of the course, learning will include developing difficult surfaces, such as water, rock formations, foliage, flora and atmospheric elements through painting.
Optional In-Person Field Trip:
As a special highlight, students will have the option to participate in an in-person field trip to the McMichael Gallery, where Martha Johnson will personally guide the group through the "Tom Thomson: North Star" exhibition. This exclusive experience will offer a closer look at Thomson's original artworks and allow Martha to share deeper insights into his creative process and impact on Canadian art. Students are expected to make their own way to the gallery.
