POLAR BEARS AND THE ARCTIC
In Latin, polar bears are named Ursus maritimus, which means “sea bear.” It fits perfectly for a species that spends much of its time in or around the ocean. However, as the sea ice melts, polar bears are being pushes further down the coastline with the threat of global warming.
Roughly two thirds of the world's polar bear population lives in Canadian territory, and therefore Canadians have a special responsibility to look out for these beautiful animals.
In Inukitut, polar bears are Nanuq, and they are considered wise and powerful. Inuit people have a great respect for the polar bear in their hunting traditions and legends.
Despite having paws the size of your dinner plates, polar bears are able to balance on ice by evenly distributing their weight. They also have three sets of eyelids, one of which specifically helps protect their eyes from the glare of ice.
