Sketching the Garden and Orchard: Ink and Watercolour at the Spadina Museum
About this course
Allow the historic grounds of the Spadina Museum to be your studio for a 3 hour plein air workshop. The five acre garden restored to appear as it did in the early twentieth century, offers respite from the fast pace of contemporary urban life, and an ideal setting to sketch from nature. Drawing from colourful perennial flower beds, lush expanses of grass, vegetables, herbs, a grape arbor and an apple orchard, you will use ink, watercolour, and other media, to record your experience of this remarkable garden. With the guidance of artist and educator Rose Montgomery-Whicher, you will learn strategies for developing your observational drawing skills, as well as innovative approaches to drawing botanical subjects. Learn to make drawings that capture not only what your eyes see, but what you hear, smell, and touch: what kind of marks correspond to a robin’s song? Or the bark of an old tree? What does the scent of lavender look like? What kind of line does the flight of a bee make? How to mix a colour that matches this particular hollyhock? Suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners.
