About rose

Rose Montgomery-Whicher is an artist, educator, and author, whose drawing practice embraces experimental as well as observational drawing. Working mainly in graphite, ink, and charcoal her subjects are found in gardens, in faces and on walks. Before joining ARAS in 2023, she taught students of all ages in gallery, school, community and university settings. These included the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and in the UK, the University of London, and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge. With a PhD in art education as well as a BFA, her teaching is informed by philosophical and historical perspectives and an understanding of how we learn to draw. Rose’s classes combine the joy of mark making with the gradual building of skills and artistic confidence. She is the author of “The phenomenology of observation drawing: Reflections on an enduring practice” (Routledge, 2022). Rose lives in Toronto with her husband, young adult son, and a dog named Tapioca.
