In this engaging course, students will explore the fundamentals of creating visual narratives through comics and cartooning with educator and published cartoonist, Dave Lapp. With a focus on channelling their own artistic visions and stories, youth students will learn essential techniques for developing characters, crafting dialogue, and structuring their narratives. Dave will share valuable insights and tools that empower students to bring their unique ideas to life through drawing. This course offers a supportive and dynamic environment for young artists to enhance their skills and delve into the vibrant world of cartooning.
Join accomplished cartoonist Dave Lapp for an exciting youth course! With his extensive experience as a cartoonist and his passion for guiding young creatives, we hope to inspire the next generation of cartoonists!

Understanding Visual Storytelling Basics
Students will learn the fundamentals of visual storytelling, including character development, dialogue, and narrative structure, to effectively communicate their own stories through comics.
Developing Unique Characters and Storylines
By exploring character design and story creation, students will gain skills in bringing their imaginative ideas to life, creating unique characters and engaging plots.
Mastering Cartooning Techniques
Through guided practice and instruction, students will develop essential cartooning techniques, such as expressive drawing, panel layout, and speech bubble placement, to enhance their visual narratives.
Building Confidence in Creative Expression
In a supportive environment, students will grow their confidence in their artistic abilities, learning to express their thoughts and ideas boldly through the medium of cartooning.

For this in-person course, Avenue Road Arts School will provide all necessary materials for all student projects.

Avenue Road Arts School works in compliance with COVID-19 health and safety requirements. Although masks are not mandated at this time, we strongly encourage students to wear a mask in situations where social distancing becomes not possible.

To enter the building of The Centre for Social Innovation at 720 Bathurst Street, Toronto, ON M5S 2R4, you will be provided with a key code in the case that building’s front door is locked. This information will be provided to you closer to the start date of the course.
