Painting with Nature is a unique and immersive course that invites you to explore the beauty of the natural world as your primary artistic tool. In this four-week course, you'll discover how to create artwork using various natural elements—such as leaves, soil, rocks, twigs, and even sunlight—rather than predominantly with traditional paint brushes. This aims to encourage you to engage with your environment and embrace the creative possibilities that nature offers.

Throughout the course, you will experiment with mark-making techniques and the incorporation of natural materials into your compositions, allowing your artwork to unfold organically. Rather than merely depicting nature, you will collaborate with it, exploring abstraction, pattern, texture, colour, and composition. This course fosters a sense of openness and curiosity, encouraging you to let go of conventional methods and embrace the unexpected.

Explore Natural Materials: Gain hands-on experience using a variety of natural elements for mark-making and as integrated components in your artwork.

Develop Unique Techniques: Learn innovative techniques for creating texture and pattern through the use of nature, encouraging experimentation and creativity.

Embrace Abstraction: Cultivate the ability to create abstract compositions that focus on form, colour, and texture rather than realistic depictions.

Canvas, canvas board, or panel (11x14” or larger)
Pad of mixed media paper (11x14” is recommended)
Drawing paper
Graphite pencil
Willow charcoal
Eraser
Rubbing alcohol
Salt
White pva glue
Tissue paper (colours can include: white, blue, grey, black, and other ‘winter-y’ colours)
Modelling paste
Palette knife
Paint palette
Acrylic paints (white, black, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, other colours you may have on hand)
Paint brushes

To participate in one of our virtual classes, you will require the following: A computer (laptop or desktop, with an internal microphone and camera) OR a newer model iPad, Tablet, iPhone or Smart Phone. Please make sure that you have hands-free capability, using a stand or tripod A stable WIFI connection The Zoom application (free when you sign up) Materials for the class that you registered for (see individual material lists provided for each class) A quiet work area for creating and participating in your class
