Building Layers & Texture: Mixed Media, Paper, Paint

Art student receiving personalized instruction in an independent study class at Avenue Road Arts School, Toronto

Building Layers & Texture: Mixed Media, Paper, Paint

This in-person workshop is an exploration of material interaction and surface creation. Under the guidance of ARAS Creative Director and educator, Evan Faith Hutchinson, you will learn to construct richness and subtle intricacies in your work by applying physical layers of media. The curriculum begins with practical techniques for creating your own mixed media papers using specialized printing tools (Gelli plates and brayers provided). You will then analyze the properties of various acrylic mediums (including crackle and sand effects) and observe how they transform paint and texture upon interaction. By combining these unique mixed-media papers with acrylics and other components, you will learn how to unify diverse visual elements into cohesive final piece(s). This workshop is equally an exercise in material exploration and the cultivation of finished artwork, empowering you to expand your painterly approach with powerful, textured surfaces.
