Contemporary Impression: Today’s Impressionist Influence
This virtual short course, guided by Farida Zaman, is a focused exploration of Impressionism’s rich technical vocabulary, translating its key concepts into a contemporary context. Each week, you will delve into a different foundational artist and subject matter; this will include exploring the intimate interior scenes inspired by Matisse, structuring the exterior scene using the delicate lens of Cézanne, defining light and atmosphere in landscape painting through the influence of Monet, and building form in still life compositions while drawing on Van Gogh’s mark making innovations. Through direct painting exercises, you will investigate expressive colour palettes, deliberate mark making, and active gestural brushwork. This course is designed to show you how classic techniques have seamlessly informed modern and contemporary art, challenging you to integrate these powerful influences to inspire your own dynamic compositions.
