Expressing Mood and Emotion Through Paint
Expressing Mood and Emotion Through Paint is a four-week virtual course designed for artists of all levels who seek to infuse their work with deeper meaning. Led by celebrated artist and educator Jennifer Hinrichs, this course shifts the focus from literal replication to the intentional use of colour theory, gestural strokes, and creative energy. Using reference images of your own choosing, you will learn to deconstruct a scene and rebuild it as a dynamic expression of feeling rather than a mere visual record. Through live demonstrations and personalized guidance, Jennifer will show you how to channel your unique perspective onto the canvas, ensuring every brushstroke contributes to a cohesive, atmospheric narrative that evokes emotion.
- Deconstruct Visual References: Learn to identify the emotional core of an image and prioritize mood over literal detail.
- Understand Emotive Colour Theory: Understand how to select and mix palettes that evoke specific psychological responses and atmospheres.
- Develop Dynamic Brushwork: Practice varied mark-making techniques to convey energy, tension, or tranquility within a composition.
- Channel Artistic Energy: Explore methods for translating personal feelings and intuition into physical paint application.
- Enhance Compositional Impact: Use light, shadow, and focal points to direct the viewer’s emotional journey through the piece.
- Foster Creative Confidence: Gain the tools to move away from “correctness” and toward an authentic, expressive style of painting.
- Students could use whatever paint medium they choose, but I will be using acrylic paints
- Palette: Titanium White (large), Mars Black, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Viridian green, Cadmium Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, plus any other colours you choose.
- Supports: Canvas, canvas boards or very heavy paper, minimum size 9″x12″, and as large as you like
- Brushes: A variety of sizes from small to large. I recommend a couple of flat, square headed brushes that come in different widths, such as 1/2″ and 1″ . If you like to paint large, have at least one house painting brush available.
- Other: Sketch pad or newsprint, charcoal, conté. If you like to mix media, bring along chalk or oil pastels (not necessary)
