Luminous Watercolours: Fluidity, Reflections & Shorelines
This immersive single-day workshop invites you to explore the captivating interplay of light and liquid as we transition into the vibrant spring season. Under the guidance of Dinesh, you will delve into the technical artistry required to capture the “sparkle” of sunny shorelines and the rhythmic, fluid movement of water. Moving beyond basic washes, this session focuses on loose realism, learning how to suggest complex reflections and transparent depths without overworking the paper. Through ongoing demonstrations and guided practice, you will harness the unpredictable beauty of the medium to create atmospheric coastal and lakeside scenes by understanding how to control the medium as well as the art of letting go. Dinesh fosters a classroom atmosphere that balances technical applications with patient, step-by-step guidance, ensuring every painter finds their unique rhythm between the pigment and the page.
- Anatomy of Reflections: Learn to analyze how light interacts with water surfaces to distinguish between deep transparency and surface shimmer.
- Navigate the Colour Palette: Develop specialized colour-mixing skills to capture the specific, luminous greens and cool blues of water without losing clarity.
- Execute Dynamic Edge Control: Practice the transition between “lost” edges in fluid water and “found” edges along rocky shorelines or sandy banks.
- Balance Spontaneity with Structure: Build compositions that use the “Expressive Wash” for atmosphere while applying strategic, loose details to anchor the viewer’s eye.
- Control Value for Luminous Effects: Refine your ability to preserve the white of the paper to mimic the blinding glint of sunlight on ripples.
- Expand Textural Vocabulary: Explore “wet-into-wet” and “dry-brush” combinations to represent the varied textures of moss, wet stone, and moving currents.
- Paints: Students Preference/ Recommended brand Winsor newton Cotman/professional grade
- Brushes: #12 -24 Round Synthetic Sable Brushes, #2 or Large Rigger Brushes, #4 and #8 Flat Brushes, #8 and #6 and #4 Mop/Quill brushes,
For this class: Round Brushes – Different Sizes Mop/Quill Brushes – #4, #6, #8
Rigger/Liner Brush Flat Brush – Optional
Cat tongue Brush – Optional
- Watercolour Paper:
When it comes to watercolour paper, always go for 300 GSM (140 lb). I prefer Saunders Waterford and Baohong watercolour paper. You can also see that any watercolour paper of good grade will suffice. For class demos, I will use Baohong watercolour paper as it’s a more affordable option for students. You can find it on Amazon. - Palettes:
Watercolour palettes or mixing trays for blending and mixing colours. Porcelain or plastic palettes work well. - Water Containers:
Students will need containers for clean water to dilute and clean their brushes. Plastic or glass containers are suitable. - Pencils and Erasers:
Pencils for sketching and drawing before painting. I prefer mechanical pencils with 0.5 or 0.7 to draw thin light sketches. - Paper Towels or Sponges
These are handy for blotting, lifting excess water or paint, and creating texture.
