The Old Masters’ Method: Grisaille and French Glazing

The Old Masters’ Method is a specialized two-day in-person workshop led by Alanna Peters that explores the sophisticated intersection of classical tradition and contemporary application. This workshop guides students through the “Grisaille” (grey-scale) process: a technique favored by French Academy masters to achieve realism and depth.

  • Day 1: Focuses on greyscale: Using a reference image, you will execute a complete monochromatic composition, resolving all issues of proportion, value, and light without the distraction of color.
  • Day 2: The magic! You will learn the chemistry of the French glazing method, applying thin, transparent veils of color over your dry underpainting.

This workflow allows the artist to achieve luminosity as light passes through the glaze and reflects off the white of the base layer. You will leave this workshop with a finished piece and a new understanding of a timeless methodology that can be applied to any contemporary painting practice.
