The Old Masters’ Method: Grisaille and French Glazing
The Old Masters’ Method is a specialized two-day in-person workshop led by Alanna Peters that explores the sophisticated intersection of classical tradition and contemporary application. This workshop guides students through the “Grisaille” (grey-scale) process: a technique favored by French Academy masters to achieve realism and depth.
- Day 1: Focuses on greyscale: Using a reference image, you will execute a complete monochromatic composition, resolving all issues of proportion, value, and light without the distraction of color.
- Day 2: The magic! You will learn the chemistry of the French glazing method, applying thin, transparent veils of color over your dry underpainting.
This workflow allows the artist to achieve luminosity as light passes through the glaze and reflects off the white of the base layer. You will leave this workshop with a finished piece and a new understanding of a timeless methodology that can be applied to any contemporary painting practice.
- Grisaille Foundation: Learn to see and paint in pure value, resolving composition and form in a black-and-white “dead layer.”
- Execute the French Glazing Method: Understand the technical ratio of medium to pigment required to create stable, transparent color veils.
- Understand Optical Colour Mixing: Discover how layering a “cool” glaze over a “warm” underpainting (or vice versa) creates a visual depth impossible to achieve with premixed paint.
- Control Tonal Values: Practice isolating light logic from color, ensuring your painting has a powerful “read” even from a distance.
- Navigate Historical Media: Gain insight into the oils and mediums used by Old Masters to ensure archival quality and smooth application.
- Modern Application: Learn how to adapt this 18th-century workflow to speed up your contemporary studio practice.
