The Painter’s Blueprint: Foundations of Preliminary Drawing

The Painter’s Blueprint is a focused six-week virtual intensive designed to sharpen the observational and structural skills essential for any painting practice. Led by Alanna Peters, this course moves beyond basic sketching to explore how a well-executed drawing acts as a blueprint for successful colour application and tonal depth. Students will delve into the mechanics of linear perspective, value mapping, and gesture, learning how to “think like a painter” while holding a pencil in using a photographic reference. Through live demonstrations and structured exercises, you will practice translating a photograph into simplified planes and volumes, ensuring your compositions possess a professional level of structural integrity before the first brushstroke is laid.
