Inspired by gesture, movement, and emotion, you’ll explore mark making techniques that go beyond representation, tapping into rhythm, energy, and personal connection. Through guided exercises and creative play, develop a practice that is as instinctive and alive as nature itself.
Intuitive Mark Making: Nature and Gesture is a four-week virtual course led by artist Martha Johnson, inviting you to explore the landscape through movement, instinct, and personal expression. Drawing on inspiration from impressionism, abstract expressionism, and contemporary art, this course encourages you to move beyond representation and connect with the energy and rhythms of the natural world. Each session is an invitation to loosen your approach, experiment with gesture, and let your marks reflect both what you see and how you feel.
Through a mix of guided exercises and open-ended exploration, you’ll work with line, shape, colour, and texture to capture the essence of nature. Martha will share techniques for using a variety of tools and media, encouraging you to trust your instincts and respond to your materials in the moment. The focus is not on perfecting details, but on discovering your own visual language - one that is dynamic, responsive, and personal. Whether you’re new to intuitive marking making or seeking to refresh your creative practice, this course offers a supportive space to play, reflect, and grow.
