Plein Air in Bloom: Spring Florals and Lakeside Light

Artist painting outdoors on an easel during a Toronto plein air landscape class.

Plein Air in Bloom: Spring Florals and Lakeside Light

This one-day workshop provides an expert-guided framework for painting on-site at one of Canada’s premier public gardens. Working amidst the peak bloom of the rhododendron and azalea collections, you will learn how to simplify a dense botanical landscape into a strong, cohesive composition.

Under the guidance of Sam Paonessa, the session will cover essential field techniques: managing the logistics of an outdoor setup, intricacies of colour mixing for spring greens and florals, and the use of both precise and gestural brushwork to define form. Through a combination of live demonstrations and individual on-site critiques, Sam will show you how to navigate the nuances of plein air light and environmental variables. You will leave the session with a study that captures the specific character and atmosphere of the gardens.
