Join Jennifer Hinrichs in exploring the versatility and vibrancy of acrylic painting in this course designed for both beginners and experienced artists. Acrylics are celebrated for their rich pigments, quick drying time, and adaptability, making them an ideal medium for creative expression across a wide range of subjects and styles.
Guided by Jennifer’s extensive experience and instruction, students will develop a strong foundation in key artistic principles, including colour theory, light and shadow, composition, visual perspective, brushwork, and paint application techniques. This course will offer step-by-step demonstrations, hands-on practice, and personalized feedback to help develop your unique practice.
Working from photo references and guided exercises, students will explore various approaches to acrylic painting, building confidence and technical skills at their own pace through a range of subject matter. Through individualized attention and supportive critiques, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how to use acrylics effectively to create dynamic, expressive artwork.

Paints: If buying new paints, it’s best not to get student quality acrylics. Golden, Liquitex, Winsor and Newton heavy body artist quality paints work well. Otherwise, just use what you already have
- Palette: titanium white, mars black, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, viridian green, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow medium, raw sienna, cadmium red, raw umber
Supports: - New students, four or five 12” x 16” or larger canvases or canvas boards. Returning students, canvases in your preferred size
Brushes: - If buying new brushes, choose brushes made for acrylic and water colour rather than oil paints, which are stiffer. Otherwise, use what you have that is similar.
- A one-inch flat brush, square tip
- A half-inch flat brush, square tip
- A quarter inch flat brush, square tip
- #6 or #8 round brush with a good point
Other: - 2B lead pencil
- 4B charcoal pencil
- white gesso
- willow charcoal sticks
- small (5”x7”) notebook
