About this course

This fun-filled course, led by educator and published cartoonist Dave Lapp, shares professional tips to allow young storytellers (Ages 8-12) refine their ideas into amazing comics. In our supportive studio, students will analyze the essential building blocks of sequential art, from developing unforgettable heroes and hilarious villains to drawing awesome action scenes. You will construct engaging narratives and learn to write dialogue that truly pops off the page, ultimately creating your own comic book! This class is an exciting opportunity to boost drawing skills and explore your storytelling potential, mastering the art of the panel one step at a time.

What you'll learn

  • Define and apply fundamental techniques for character design and development.
  • Cultivate skills in crafting dialogue and speech bubbles for comic narratives.
  • Explore principles of sequential art and panel layout for storytelling.
  • Develop a personal visual vocabulary for cartooning and comic illustration.
  • Construct original comic strips or short narratives expressing personal ideas.
What students say

They didn't think they were artists either.

"I really didn't know the first thing about Contemporary art beforehand. He has a real talent for encouraging and inspiring students — everyone leaves his classes feeling great about themselves and their work."
Jamie Mudrick · Art of Colour
"A very engaging and fun class. It's a fantastic way to help loosen up and get the creative juices flowing. If I was able to, I would take this course every time it's offered."
Leslie Greenbaum · Drawing More Expressively
"I loved all of the exercises — it was very inspiring for me and a fabulous entry into drawing. It was way too short. The four weeks flew by."
Jamie Mudrick · Drawing More Expressively
