Abstraction: Mixed Media and Materials
Online classes
Explore the world of media, materials, tools and techniques from paints, pastes, pouring and crackling. Guided by professional abstract artist, Kirk Sutherland, material exploration will transform canvases into experimental, abstract bodies of work.
Explore the world of abstract art and new artistic materials in this five-week virtual course designed for artists of all levels. If you’ve ever wondered about the possibilities of unconventional media or how different materials can expand your creative toolkit, this course is for you. Over five weeks, students will experiment with acrylic mediums, pouring paints, crackle paste, modeling paste, and a range of photo-transfer gels and more.
Each week focuses on a different material and technique, exploring how to blend and apply them to create dynamic abstract compositions. Students will learn how various tools, from palette knives and rollers to sponges and brushes, can be used to generate texture, depth, and expressive effects. The course provides an opportunity to mix traditional methods with more experimental approaches, encouraging students to push the boundaries of what’s possible in abstract art.
By experimenting with different media and surfaces, students will develop a versatile and personal artistic practice, ultimately gaining confidence in selecting and applying materials that align with their artistic vision.
