Everything SPRING: A Seasonal Art Exploration
Online classes
Reimagine spring’s energy through art history with Martha Johnson. From Monet’s blooms to bold abstraction, explore colour, brushwork, and symbolism to craft your own vibrant ode to renewal. Blend tradition and innovation in this journey celebrating the season’s timeless inspiration.
Spring has long been a source of inspiration for artists, symbolizing renewal, growth, and transformation. From Monet’s blooming gardens and Van Gogh’s almond blossoms to contemporary abstract interpretations of spring’s energy, this six-week virtual course, led by artist and educator Martha Johnson, explores how and why we capture spring in art.
Through a combination of painting and drawing, students will examine the colours, palettes, patterns, textures, symbols and subject matter that define spring-themed art across different artistic movements. Traditional representations of spring—such as floral landscapes, emerging wildlife, and seasonal still life—will be studied alongside modern and unconventional interpretations that challenge traditional norms.
Students will experiment with techniques such as expressive brushwork, glazing for luminosity, and layering for depth, using colour to evoke the mood and vibrancy of the season. Working with both historical references and contemporary inspirations, students will develop a deeper understanding of how spring has been—and continues to be—captured in art.
This course is perfect for those looking to expand their skills in composition, colour theory, and expressive mark-making, while reimagining the ways we see and depict the season.
