"Expressive Horizons: Essentials in Landscape Painting" is now a condensed five-week virtual course designed to guide artists of all levels through the captivating process of landscape painting. Under the expert guidance of Sam Paonessa, a professional visual artist specializing in landscape and plein air painting, this course offers a comprehensive exploration into capturing the beauty of the world around us. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter, this course caters to all skill levels and is adaptable for those who prefer to work with either oils or acrylics.
Throughout this condensed course, you will delve into the pivotal elements of landscape painting. Starting with the role of value, color, and its mixing, along with perspective, you will learn how to create vibrant and harmonious palettes that reflect the natural world. Essential aspects such as composition, line, form, and texture will be thoroughly explored. Techniques involving brushwork, palette knife, and brayer use will be demonstrated, enabling you to add depth, contrast, and a sense of realism to your landscapes.
The course emphasizes individual artistic expression, encouraging you to develop a personal style and creativity. With Sam Paonessa's demonstrations, personalized attention, and group critiques, you will receive comprehensive support and guidance throughout the five weeks.

Paint Colours (oils or acrylics): Titanium White (Large tube), Cadmium Yellow Light or Hansa Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Ultramarine Blue (Large Tube), Thalo Blue, Quinacridone Magenta or Medium Magenta, Dioxazine Purple (optional), Phthalo Green or Viridian Green, Permanent Green or Green Light (optional), Sap Green (with a strong value), Cadmium Orange or other Yellow Orange, Raw Umber (optional), Indanthrene Blue (Indigo Blue in oils - optional), Transparent Red Oxide (optional), Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black or Paynes Gray.
Gesso - small tub (ex. Liquitex or Golden)

For Oils Only: GAMBLIN non-toxic Safflower Gel Medium in a tube OR Galkyd (Fast Drying Medium)
Disposable Palette (9x12 or larger)
Filbert Brushes: 3, 4, 8, 10
Flat Brushes: #3, 6, 8, 12 (Soft hair/synthetic)
Round Brushes: #1, 2, 4 (soft hair synthetic or sable)
1 – 2-inch-wide house painting brush (or even wider for applying tints)
Shapers: Princeton Catalyst White Silicone Mini-blade #4
Brayer: 2” or 4”
Frederix Canvas Pad 9x12 or 12x16
Canvas, Birch or Masonite Panels (or a combination to try various surfaces)
*Square cradled panels or boards are recommended when using a brayer
Mixed media sketchbook (XL Canson 9”x12”)
Pencils or Watercolour Pencils in gray, black, brown for sketching

Green painters’ tape
Nitrile or Latex gloves if desired
Artist’s Soap (Baby Oil Or Murphy’s Oil Soap for oil painters) for cleaning brushes
We will be using various pieces of free image editing software for the class (no purchase necessary).

To participate in one of our virtual classes, you will require the following: A computer (laptop or desktop, with an internal microphone and camera) OR a newer model iPad, Tablet, iPhone or Smart Phone. Please make sure that you have hands-free capability, using a stand or tripod A stable WIFI connection The Zoom application (free when you sign up) Materials for the class that you registered for (see individual material lists provided for each class) A quiet work area for creating and participating in your class
