Modern Art Movements: Innovation in Colour, Form, and Space
Online classes
Trace modern art’s seismic reinvention of vision—from Munch’s visceral emotion to Judd’s industrial purity. Under Kirk Sutherland’s mentorship, dissect Expressionist hues, Cubist fractures, and Minimalist space, then channel their radical DNA into your own boundary-pushing abstractions.
Modern Art Movements: Innovation in Colour, Form, and Space offers a comprehensive exploration of the artistic revolutions that reshaped the 20th century. From the expressive colour of Expressionism to the geometric precision of Minimalism, students will study the innovative techniques and theories that redefined how we view and interact with art.
The course delves into the works of iconic artists such as Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Donald Judd, examining their groundbreaking approaches to colour theory, composition, and spatial relationships. Students will analyze how these movements not only transformed artistic practice but also challenged our perception of reality, emotion, and materiality.
In addition to historical study, students will apply these modern art principles to their own abstract works, experimenting with colour palettes, form, and spatial compositions. Using a range of materials and techniques, participants will have the opportunity to explore how to push the boundaries of space, texture, and visual impact in their own creative process in channelling their own artistic voice under the guidance of artist and educator, Kirk Sutherland.
