Heritage of the North: Painting with the Group of Seven

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Canadian landscape through the lens of the Group of Seven artists. This 6-week virtual art class, led by artist and educator Martha Johnson, focuses on the iconic works, approaches, techniques and perspectives of the Group of Seven artists. With a deep family connection to Thomson’s legacy, Martha has extensively explored many of his and Group of Seven’s painting sites. In this course, students will have the opportunity to use contemporary images of their own as well as images provided by the instructor of Algonquin Park, Canoe Lake, Rosedale Valley, and the Don River Ravine as subject matter, providing a unique opportunity to study the landscapes that inspired Group of Seven’s masterpieces.

Develop Personal Vision and Style: Translate your unique perspective of the Canadian landscape into artwork that connects and holds memory, inspired by the Group of Seven artists.
Explore Canadian Locations: Gain insights into how the Group of Seven artists approached the Canadian wilderness, using real or inspired imagery from key locations.
Master Challenging Surfaces: Learn techniques for depicting difficult surfaces such as water, rock formations, foliage, flora, and atmospheric elements through painting.
Use Large Brushes Effectively: Ease into using large brushes to illustrate expansive skies, northern terrains, migration routes and more
Incorporate Various Media: Experiment with different mediums, including all painting media, drawing media, and mixed media to enrich your artistic expression.
Capture the Spirit of the Wilderness: Embrace the collective experience of the Canadian landscape to shape your culture and artistic endeavours, connecting personal vision with national heritage.

Open to all painterly media. Colours should include: Ultramarine blue, Alizarin Crimson, Hansa Yellow, Yellow ochre, Titanium White, Mars or Lamp Black
8-ounce white Gesso
Small Matte medium
Sketchbook (no smaller than 9x12”)
White Staedlater eraser
India or sepia ink, may also be substituted with a raw umber acrylic pigment
Sharpener or blade
Charcoal sticks
White chalk
Conte sticks
Optional: soft pastels
Blending sticks
Two to three acrylic brushes
Two bulldog clips and masking tape
Rags or paper towels
One Canvas or wooden panel approximately 12” x 14”. Other supports to be discussed in the first class

To participate in one of our virtual classes, you will require the following: A computer (laptop or desktop, with an internal microphone and camera) OR a newer model iPad, Tablet, iPhone or Smart Phone. Please make sure that you have hands-free capability, using a stand or tripod A stable WIFI connection The Zoom application (free when you sign up) Materials for the class that you registered for (see individual material lists provided for each class) A quiet work area for creating and participating in your class
